Employers Need To Reassess Their Benefits Approach As Workers Want More.

Better pay and benefits are the primary motivation for 1 in 3 workers to look for a new position. Additionally, employees seek greater work-life balance or flexibility.

Recent years have seen a generational shift in the relationship between companies and employees. The importance of employee perks has increased in this brave new world.

Sina Chehrazi, cofounder and CEO of Nayva, states that it has been difficult for employers over the last few years. “This is the first generation of employees who have experienced a pandemic, a war, and social media. Employees want to work for an employer that supports their values, who provides them with what they want from their lives, and who values them, as seen by the Great Resignation and the Great Reshuffle. Benefits play a significant role in that value proposition, as we all know.

During the July 26 webinar “Rethinking Benefits: A Focus on Employee Experience and Compliance,” sponsored by ADP, Chehrazi and other benefits experts offered their knowledge. Employees and job searchers hold many of the cards at a period of intense competition for competent labor.

The unemployment rate has decreased from a record-high of 14.7% at the start of the pandemic in 2020 to 3.6 percent as of June, according to Maggie Novo-Chavarry, senior principal of ADP Strategic Advisory Services. “The labor market is still robust. Just last month, U.S. firms created 372,000 new employment. Employers have had to use creativity to draw talent, stay competitive, and keep employees because workers are still in charge of many workplace decisions. Additionally, they had to deal with a plethora of rules that are forcing modifications in employee health coverage.

According to a recent poll, 1 in 3 workers cited greater pay and benefits as their main motivation for looking for a new position. Flexibility, or a better work-life balance, was the second justification. Employers must continue to travel the difficult path ahead and reconsider the significance and worth of their benefits, according to her.

Simply put, employees are aware of what they want and aren’t afraid to change professions to get it.

VP and head of enrollment at Guardian Susan Oliver adds, “What we are seeing is that people are not scared to quit a secure, stable career to pursue a passion project.” By offering benefits that are important to your employees, you can demonstrate your importance to them and your concern for them. Compared to before, they are far more holistic in character.

For instance, unlike in the past, voluntary benefits are now primarily required. Look for ways to enhance voluntary benefits and include them into a comprehensive benefits plan, advises Novo-Chavarry. “Voluntary benefits have become a must-have in your benefits portfolio.” “There is a movement centered on lifestyle advantages. This is a method to differentiate your perks and really widen your understanding of what your staff needs.

These advantages are currently viewed as being crucial by employees:

  • Health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance
  • Telehealth consultations with mental health treatment
  • Benefits provided voluntarily (fill gaps and align to needs of workforce)
  • FSA and HSAs
  • PTO (vacation and sick leave)
  • Paid time off for parents

Benefit packages by themselves, while important, are insufficient. Additionally, employees anticipate the following from their benefits experience:

  • Readily available resources and a simple enrollment process
  • Consistently precise communication
  • Self-service/mobile
  • Transparency (lower out-of-pocket costs when accessing care)
  • A statement confirming the benefits

Additionally important are communication and education. Employees admit they are unaware of all the perks their business provides even if they claim to know what they want in a benefits package.

According to Chehrazi, “90% of employees regard benefits as the second-most important factor they consider when analyzing a new opportunity. However, 70% say they lack confidence in benefit choices. They are unaware of their advantages. Education is as vital in benefits as it is in anything else in life when it comes to attracting and keeping talent, it has been increasingly obvious over time.

“Companies are spending more money on benefits than ever before. How are you expressing that the investments are bringing the benefits plans to life? The greatest effects of benefits on a shifting workforce can be observed there.

At open enrollment, there must be clear communication.

People don’t truly comprehend the benefits that are offered to them, thus enrollment is very crucial, according to Oliver. “During enrollment is the best moment to educate employees of that information. We must communicate with employees in a way that suits them, using their preferred method of communication, and meeting them where they are at the time of open enrollment.

In any economy, recruiting and staff retention are key components of an efficient employee benefit plan. It is crucial in the commercial world of today.

The current quo is no longer acceptable, according to Novo-Chavarry. “The perks provided must be a priority, not only to retain the best employees but also to stand out in the job market. A competitive benefits package may be the difference between hiring your strongest, most qualified job seekers at a time when employers are growing more picky.
