How The Epidemic Prompted Businesses To Reconsider Their Health And Wellness Services.

Employees are putting a greater emphasis on their personal health and wellness, and businesses are responding.

The COVID-19 epidemic has a wide range of effects on workplaces around the world. The workplace as we know it transformed practically overnight, from businesses being forced to close to stay-at-home and remote work orders. Fast forward to today, two years later, and workplaces are still changing. The evolution of employee benefits is one of the most significant trends we continue to observe.

Employee benefits were quite basic prior to the epidemic, with a focus on promoting work-life balance and establishing an engaging and enticing office atmosphere. Free lunches, parking reimbursements, mobile phone stipends, and other amenities were available in addition to health care and vision coverage. Employees are prioritizing their own health and wellness over these office amenities as a result of the pandemic, and employers are being forced to respond.

Wellness and health before the pandemic

While some businesses prioritized health and wellness benefits, the majority struggled to put them in place. Furthermore, the majority of those who did invest in costly workplace wellness programs did not experience a return on investment or an improvement in employee health outcomes. Instead of full-fledged programs, employees are more likely to find optional gym memberships or healthy in-office food offers in their benefits.

Employee wellness initiatives should include an instructional component to highlight why healthy behaviors important, in addition to gym memberships and workplace snacks. These educational features provide knowledge and empower individuals to enhance their health, whether it’s content that employees can utilize to better grasp what healthy practices are or nutritional counseling from a coach.

Reset the pandemic era

When the pandemic struck and employees all across the world were forced to work from home, gym memberships and nutritious office snacks were no longer viable options. The advancement of health and wellness advantages surged at this time.

What began as a focus on workplace burnout, inflexible work hours, insufficient mental health support, and increased stress quickly evolved into an examination of employees’ overall health and what companies could do to enhance not one, but numerous parts of their lives. Not only did companies begin to see that employee benefits, particularly those related to mental and physical health, may be life-changing for their employees, but employees recognized as well – and were vocalizing it.

More employers are providing enhanced health benefits, extending wellness programs, and enhancing physical health advantages through technology such as virtual workouts, which we’ve seen as a trend. While this was a step in the right direction, it just scratched the surface of what health and wellness programs might offer from an educational and holistic health standpoint for both employees and employers.

The post-pandemic era

Employee perks such as cell phone allowances, free meals, coffee or snacks at the workplace, and even remote work are now outnumbered by health and wellness benefits. More businesses have discovered the positive impact these initiatives have on their employees and bottom line. The pandemic also highlighted the importance of holistic health programs that include both mental and physical wellness, as opposed to traditional calorie counting or step counting apps.

Implementing holistic health and wellness programs has been found to inspire employees to adopt healthy habits while enhancing retention, reducing health insurance claims, and limiting absence from both the employee and company viewpoints. Most applications or products leave out the educational side of health and wellness, but holistic health programs do.

I see a greater emphasis on holistic health benefits for employees in 2022 and beyond. Increased isolation and uncertainty can have a bad influence on one’s health. Mental health resources, mood tracking, and health literacy resources can help. The most successful businesses will put money into services that provide employees the tools they need to take charge of their physical and mental health. When it comes to health and wellness benefits, I feel we’re only scratching the surface. I believe we have a generation of employees that will soon embrace these programs and want the same from their employers.

While the pandemic brought attention to workplace health and wellness issues, it also prompted change and provided opportunities for employees and businesses to improve. It highlighted what has historically been absent in benefits while providing employees with the necessary skills to reclaim their health. We’re at the start of the holistic health revolution, and I’m excited to see more firms use their employees’ actual potential through these programs.
