Rethinking Your Retirement? In The Previous Year, 65% Of Business Owners Put Off Planning.

According to a recent survey, supply chain problems and record inflation have had a severe influence on business owners’ retirement plans, leading many of them to review their investing methods and seek the advice of consultants to deal with the short-term volatility.

In the past year, supply chain problems and inflation have had a severe influence on business owners’ retirement plans, causing many of them to seek financial advisor help. In a recent TD Wealth poll of more than 700 business owners, more than eight out of ten said they worked with an advisor and two-thirds changed their retirement plans.

“Financial advisors need to demonstrate their value at a time where investors have a bigger voice in what they invest in, how they invest, and who they invest with,” says Alyson Klug, head of U.S. For TD Bank, wealth national sales. “Our poll reveals that investors continue to view recommendations from their advisors for new investment vehicles as a commodity, despite the growth of automatic investing platforms.

Investors are turning to their advisors for assistance in achieving their financial objectives and are looking into new chances to do so, showing that dealing with a financial advisor is still beneficial.

Numerous helpful patterns for advisers were discovered by the survey. Working with a financial advisor increases confidence in achieving retirement goals (83% vs. 75% for those without an advisor). Additionally, 43% of business owners who use a financial advisor reported speaking with them more frequently in the previous year.

Business owners are resorting to new investment vehicles in an unstable market to earn profits, and they are consulting their consultants for advice:

  • 63% of company owners said they were looking into new investment opportunities for their retirement portfolio, including 43% for digital assets, 40% for private markets, and 30% for investments with an emphasis on the environment, society, and governance.
  • 80% of business owners who consult with a financial advisor and have looked into new investment alternatives said their advisor made these suggestions.
  • The most valuable information from financial advisors that owners who deal with them cited was “Ideas for fresh investment opportunities.”
  • More than half of business owners said they utilized an automatic investing platform in 2022, including 40% who said they had used one in the year prior. This indicates that business owners continue to value independence and flexibility in their personal investments. More than half (57%) of all owners reported satisfaction with the platform they are currently utilizing for automatic investment.

As business owners face a variety of problems in the upcoming year, advisors have the chance to solidify their relationships with their clients.

The effects of record inflation and supply chain issues will be felt until 2023, according to James Beam, senior vice president and head of Investment Management, Brokerage, Planning, Retirement & Strategy at TD Wealth. “Record inflation and supply chain troubles have presented significant challenges for business owners,” he says. “Registered financial professionals are relied upon by business owners to manage short-term volatility and aid in the long-term success of their financial strategies,”
