Selling Health Insurance 101

Being a successful health insurance agent/broker doesn’t happen in an instant, one must understand that it is a process which requires the willingness to learn and eventually applying what you learned.

The core of being a successful health insurance agent is knowing how to sell the product. If you already have your insurance license that’s great. If not, you’ll have to get one before you start learning and selling.

Here’s a beginner guide on how to sell health insurance:

1. Prepare – Preparing yourself and your materials before meeting potential clients prevents poor performance.

2. Widen your Network (Tap into Others) – Attending networking events or conferences in the industry can help you learn more. Connect to other agents or brokers and learn from them, you can apply what you learn to your future meetings with potential clients.

3. Listen – It’s not all about you, it’s all about them. Ask questions and listen more, you will know what they actually need when you get to listen to your client’s stories and concerns.

4. Create a Brand (Use your Social Media) – Having a social media presence can help your potential clients find you! You can start building your brand on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or any social media site available.

5. Ask for Referrals – Your clients may have friends that have the same needs so go ahead and ask referrals from your clients. As long as you have a good relationship with your existing clients, you can get a hold of their referrals.

Selling insurance is all about the pitch. You need to be presentable and confident, speak in the language your prospects understand (you need to relate to them), and be empathetic. When you put yourself in their shoes, it is easier to explain how the insurance products will benefit them.

While you are on the cycle of selling health insurance, here are additional tips to gain and retain clients:

  • Create and monitor your sales goals for the year. This keeps you on track.
  • Be intentional to learn from other experienced independent agents.
  • Keep yourself updated with the markets and insurance trends so that you can align your solutions to prospects and clients.
  • Know when to talk, you have to listen more to your client.
  • Network as you go! Partner up with other professionals, like lawyers and accountants.
