The Value Of User Experience In Benefits Management.

Health savings accounts (HSAs) are a crucial component of a complete package of health benefits for the vast majority of American employers that offer benefits today.

Making business decisions in today’s information-rich corporate world increasingly depends on being able to acquire and comprehend information. According to a survey of more than 1,000 senior executives, highly data-driven organizations are three times more likely to report significant improvements in decision-making than those who rely less on data, according to a Harvard Business School article titled “The Advantages of Data-Driven Decision-Making.”

Employers invest hundreds of hours and incur significant price putting out benefits packages intended to attract and keep top people. This decision-making process is carried over into that procedure. Employers also tell us that they need better tools to collect, evaluate, and benchmark data against their competitors in order to continuously improve their programs, particularly with regard to health care benefits.

We also understand the importance of improving communication between employers and employees so that workers can make educated decisions about their health care, set aside money for future medical expenses, and prepare for retirement.

Benefits of education disparity

Health savings accounts (HSAs) are a crucial component of a complete package of health benefits for the vast majority of American employers that offer benefits today. However, employees are still having trouble maximizing their HSAs. For instance, according to the 2022 Mid-Year Devenir HSA Report, just 7% of health savings accounts have some of their money invested, and even in those cases, investments in HSA assets have often only been made in accounts with higher balances. We think that one of the main causes of this low investment participation is because, in benefit education, HSAs are frequently positioned as a means of spending rather than as a means of retirement and savings.

That could be starting to alter. Half of the 450 employers surveyed said they do or will position the HSA as a part of a retirement savings strategy to employees, according to the Plan Sponsor Council of America’s (PSCA) 2022 Health Savings Account Survey. Additionally, it discovered that automatic HSA enrollment for workers raises savings rates.

Increased employee awareness, comprehension, and confidence regarding their physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing are ongoing priorities, according to the HSA Bank 2022 Health & Wealth Index. It continues to be a top priority for all consumers and is an excellent opportunity for American companies who are looking for fresh approaches to luring, retaining, and engaging top personnel.

However, it is still difficult to inform workers about their health care choices and how an HSA can be used to fund both present and future needs as well as retirement investments. According to a PSCA poll, 60% of employers only educate new hires or open enrollment participants about HSAs. It would be beneficial to reframe HSAs as appealing investment opportunities by including HSA education as part of a larger financial wellness program with many touch points throughout the year, possibly alongside retirement plan education.

Many firms are swamped with employee inquiries about HSA benefits, which causes dissatisfaction due to a lack of knowledge of the different options. Additionally, a lack of comparative context to other employers and enterprises like their own has made it difficult for employers to comprehend how to advance with their HSA programs.

HSA Bank introduced an improved employer portal early this year in response to this requirement. The demands of its employer clients were addressed by HSA Bank by creating benchmarking data and other tools to help employers improve their programs, much like successful businesses listen to the needs of their clients. Employers may make informed decisions, set aside money for health care expenses, and develop retirement plans by giving employees the necessary information and communications.

What to look for in a portal for employers

  1. The most effective employer portal was developed in response to client feedback and strikes a compromise between the demands for simple transactional capabilities, program analytics, and insights that are pertinent to each employer’s unique program. In general, employers should be able to access reporting, make contributions, and quickly assess the status of employee accounts, but they also need to be able to access clear insights and data to assess whether their program is effective and achieving its objectives.
  2. Incorporating behavioral science and visual metrics into a program to give employers a benchmark for where they stand in comparison to their competitors and the industry, as well as a way to change the metrics that are most important to their particular organization, can demonstrate tremendous benefit.
  3. Employees should find it simpler to save money on taxes and health benefits by combining decision support tools and other cost-saving measures with data-driven recommendations and actionable steps, which HR teams should be able to access with ease, guidance, and resources.

Providers like HSA Bank are at the forefront of developing solutions through new enhancements that boost employers’ confidence in their benefits strategy through a better understanding of employee information needs, the capacity to predict outcomes, and an overall increased understanding of their plan performance. Employers continue to seek more robust tools to improve their ability to encourage employees to save and spend for a healthy future.
