Why The Provision Of Paid Leave For Parents Is A Missed Opportunity.

A novel financial product called paid parental leave insurance has the potential to revolutionize employee benefits and open up new business opportunities for brokers, agents, and consultants.

Although paid parental leave insurance is a new financial product, it could be a game-changing employee benefit and an untapped business opportunity for brokers, agents, and advisors.

How does it function?

Employers with between 25 and 5,000 workers are required to submit a census in order to receive a price for paid parental leave insurance. This census will provide information about the sexes and ages of the workforce.

The employer will also have to choose the specifics of the insurance. Do they wish to replace 60% or 100% of a worker’s monthly pay, for instance, when they go on parental leave? Do they prefer that the benefit last for six or sixteen weeks?

They can go ahead and buy paid parental leave insurance coverage if they like what they see in the quote. No matter if they smoke, have a history of poor health, or want to have kids soon, all employees will be covered by this policy. In the same way that every other sort of insurance coverage is paid for by the business, there is no expense to the employees.

The employer is required to submit a claim when a worker, male or female, takes parental leave for childbirth, adoption, or foster parenting. While on parental leave, the employee continues to receive pay, and the company is paid by the carrier up to $2,000 per week per employee.

If a company currently provides paid parental leave as a perk to employees, they are still eligible to acquire paid parental leave insurance and receive the same reimbursement.

After explaining the operation of paid parental leave insurance, let’s discuss the potential growth of this employee benefit.

The discussion of conversations advisors can have with employer clients regarding paid parental leave insurance will continue in the parts that follow.

Lack of previous options

Given that the alternatives are, at best, limited, paid parental leave insurance presents a great opportunity for benefits advisors.

The United States is the only developed country without a paid family leave program at the federal level. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protects employment but does not provide the compensation necessary to make employment worthwhile.

Washington, D.C., and 11 states make up the state level. provide independent paid family leave policies. Not only are there 39 states without paid family leave, but paid parental leave insurance may even supplement the few state-based programs that do exist.

A policy with a 50% income replacement benefit, for instance, would typically be less expensive than one with a 100% income replacement benefit for a California-based firm. The California state-based program, which replaces around 50% of their weekly income, may then be supplemented by this benefit.

On the private side of things, there isn’t much going on either, outside of public paid family leave schemes. Only 25% of US employees can take use of paid family leave provided by their companies.

It would be an understatement to suggest that the market for selling paid parental leave insurance as an employee benefit is unexplored. The early bird will get the worm, albeit this could not be the case in five years.

Paid parental leave is uncommon, which serves as a standalone selling factor and can serve as the starting point of a fruitful conversation with businesses considering acquiring this employee perk.

Find and keep exceptional talent

Employers who purchase paid parental leave insurance will instantly stand out in the never-ending competition to attract and keep the greatest workforce talent because paid parental leave is not currently offered in the US.

The power dynamic between employer and employee appears to have changed ever since the epidemic brought about remote work culture and The Great Resignation. Employees have taken advantage of the fact that there are more open positions than there are qualified applicants to fill them to make sure they are getting the most out of their present or potential employers. A business will miss out on the most sought-after talent if it does not provide the best and most modern employee benefits.

What better way for an employer to set themselves apart from the competition given that just 25% of employees have access to paid family leave than by providing paid parental leave insurance as an employee benefit? According to an Unum survey, 86% of millennials are less inclined to leave their jobs if they are given paid maternity leave.

Employers who were early adopters of paid parental leave insurance ought to profit from it. They boost their status as a prospective landing spot for labor talent and rapidly differentiate themselves from competing businesses.

This should be a powerful selling factor when discussing paid parental leave insurance with companies.

A meaningful benefit

Paid parental leave insurance will not only make your employer-clients a more desirable location for top talent, but it will also genuinely benefit their staff.

It’s difficult to come up with an employee perk that is terrible because most of them have good intentions and are useful. Nevertheless, it’s true to state that some employee benefits are more significant than others.

Every week lunches paid for by the employees are excellent, as are Summer Fridays when the office closes at 3 PM. But is there anything more significant than paid parental leave insurance than either of these? Employees can take months off work to care for a newborn or small child and still be paid, which makes it easier for them to pay for groceries, diapers, and everything else in between.

In a survey of 1,000 working women between the ages of 18 and 44, 74% said they wouldn’t have any money saved up if they had to take an eight-week unpaid maternity leave.

If a company offers paid parental leave insurance, they can guarantee that none of the aforementioned scenarios will ever occur to their staff, which is a great selling point.
